Translucent Borders is a three-year exploration of intercultural dialogue, practice and exchange led by NYU Tisch Arts Professor, Dr. Andy Teirstein, focusing on the role of dance and music at borders (geographic, cultural, economic). Participants are  New York University faculty in dance, music, theater, anthropology and recorded music, as well as international dance and music artists.  The project will examine ways in which dancers and musicians act as catalysts for mutual change between cultural entities.

The Institute provides time and space for artists and scholars to work across cultural, socio-political, linguistic and geographical divides. Along with colloquia at Global Network University sites, the Institute will facilitate field encounters at points of contact between music and/or dance practices. These encounters will contextualize various ways the performing arts function “at the brink,” whether of language, community, consciousness, ethnicity, or genre.
